Start and end point of our round trip in the Kansai region is Osaka. We will leave Zurich Friday morning to arrive in Osaka on Saturday. The first day in Japan is at free disposal to recover from the flight and get a feel for the place. Sunday we will explore utopia with Umeda Sky Building by Hiroshi Hara and we will visit the Church of Light and Hompokuji Temple (Tadao Ando). A short train ride the next day will lead us to historical Kyoto. Our focus here will be on its temples, gardens and parks (Kokedera, Ryoanji, Ninnaji, Kinkakuji, Kiyomizudera, etc). Tuesday we plan a visit to the Imperial Villa, Kyoto Station (Hiroshi Hara) and Kyoto Convention Center (Sashio Otani). An early morning high-speed Shinkansen train will take us to Okayama on Wednesday. En route we will stop at Himeji Castle before moving on to Korakuen Garden in Okayama. On Thursday it is time to move out of the city and visit Naoshima. The island located in the Seto Inland Sea hosts many contemporary art museums. Museums and hotels by Tadao Ando, Chichu and others. Ferry terminal and museum by Sejima. We will treat ourselves with a Sento communal bath and explore an art house project. Friday the ferry will first lead us to Teshima, Teshima Art Museum (Nishizawa) and later to Inujima with Seirensho installation. Late in the afternoon we make our way back to Osaka and enjoy the evening at free disposal. On our last day there is an optional trip to Nara. The city used to be Japan’s first permanent capital and therefore hosts various historical treasures, including some of the oldest and largest temples the country can offer. Sunday morning we pack our bags and fly back to Zurich.
